Christopher Machan

Christopher Machan born 1836 we have no pictures but know he worked at the steel works at South Bank, Middlesbrough. The following picture is a crop from a publication of steel workers and the person on the right has an uncanny resemblance to Derek Machan (great grandson) at a similar age, so could this be him?

Machan

I have researched the Machan line back with a level of confidence to Thomas Machan born in 1757 Towthorpe. With less confidence I believe his father also Thomas originated from Lofthouse Gate, Wakefield and mother Arabella Ashetone who married in Snaith (Goole) in 1742.

Towthorpe and Haxby are common towns for the Machan family for the period of 1750's to 1850's as farmers and wonder whether this is down to the fact that there was a land distribution at that time.

Thoms (b: 1757) married Elizabeth Coates in 1782 and had William (b:1793). William marriedThomison Fisher and the had 12 children the penultimat Christopher (b:1836) who moved to South Bank, Middlesbrough around 1870.  Middlesbrough was a new town and there was a migration to the area for work in the Iron Works.

The family had various events and traumas and although there was work, life was far from easy. Two work accidental deaths, loss of children, criminal activity and separation.

Christopher

Christopher Machan had some kind of accident or was unwell. He separated from his wife but do not know when or circumstances.

Towthorpe and Haxby

We have researched back to a Thomas Machan in Towthorpe who married Elizabeth Coates in 1782. We are assuming his parents were Thomas and Arabella Asheton from Wakefield but this is not confirmed.
