Professsions

When you loook through Newspaper Articles, Census Returns and Trade and Directories one thing you start to see is the different jobs people have compared to those of today. We have Whalers, Sea Captains / Master Mariners, Inn Keepers and Labourers but what does happen is the need to do more than one job and react to where the work is.

Some professions that we do not see nowadays.

Hatters, Landlords referred to as Licensed Victuallers, Turkish Bath Manager/Owner,  Horseman, etc.

I was once told that we are losing a number of words from the vocabulary annually and maybe this is a reason to consider. The ability to read and write does not necessarily mean a lack of vocabulary and this may be a factor as to describing someones employment. Or, maybe there are just less industries or trades nowadays.
